How it started

Julie and Michel have a common interest in art. They visited many museums and exhibitions and got to know a lot of artists. From these contacts started a co-operation between the employees of Michel’s firm and artists who wanted to make a work of art or a part of it in metal. The focus was always on the cooperation between the employee and the artist and not on the quality of the work of art. Michel felt that he shouldn’t judge the quality of the art work and the way the two partners had cooperated was more important for him. You can find a report of this cooperation in the book Walk with Me by Charlotte Bonduel and Luc Derycke, published by Lannoo.

Projects:
  • In 2002 Arteconomy was founded. As opposed to the collaboration between the artist and Constructies Espeel, Michel’s business, Julie focuses the cooperation on the need of the company and not on that of the artist. She wants to examine if the artist can find an answer to this need.
  • In 2003 they decided to renovate their house in cooperation with the Brussels architects 51N4E.
  • Apart from the renovation of the house they realized two more projects e.i. the Lichtbed and the Guestfiles.
  • The book Reasons for walling a house tells the story of this fertile cooperation of nine years.
  • Label Culture Espeel Claire- Roudenko- Bertin, a French artist who created it, installed it in the house of Julie and Michel.
  • In 2010-2011 the artists Katleen Vermeir and Ronny Heiremans made an experimental short film The Residence. The story is set in Hongkong and the scenes concerning the live of the main character in his loft are filmed in the house of Julie and Michel.
  • Wander - Meander a permanent performance created by the artists Sarah&Charles during their residency in the Arteconomy house between 2014 -2016.
